1958 BLACKPOOL “PROGRESS” TWIN CARS Due to a need to counteract rising crew costs, at the same time retaining high capacity cars, Manager Joe Franklin took a trip to Zurich in 1957 to evaluate the use of trailer cars already in common use on the continent. Two English Electric Railcoaches, 275 and 276 were rebuilt as a twin set, capable of seating 112 people in total, and launched on 9th April 1958. After the set’s inaugural run to Fleetwood it was used for a special Coastal Tour service, since it was found to be too long for the loading platforms on the tramway. However, it was deemed a success and when 10 new trailer cars were ordered to be towed by more converted railcoaches, certain stops were lengthened and the limited stop service began. The trailer of the prototype set was later re-motored and converted back for use as another towing car, linked to one of the new trailers. |
