Blackpool Rail Grinder No. 1 (752) Railgrinder No. 1 was built By Blackpool Corporation Transport at Rigby Road Works in 1928. Along with sister car No. 2 it was used to grind out corrugations on the rails, and also as a stores car for track maintenance work. It first appeared in lined out red livery, but in July 1935 was repainted green, and in November of the same year was fitted with snowploughs. Sister car No. 2 became redundant in the early 1960s and was acquired by the National Tramway Museum and taken to Crich in Derbyshire primarily as a source of electrical equipment for the restoration of Manchester single deck tram No.765, which now resides at Heaton Park, Manchester. From 1966 No. 2 became a works car at Crich, but was eventually taken out of service and its truck used for the restoration of Chesterfield No.7. No.l remained in service at Blackpool until 2008, being renumbered 2 in May 1968, and 752 in March 1972. In November 2008, it was acquired by the Heaton Park tramway where it is to be eventually restored to its original red livery. |
