REBUILT ENGLISH ELECTRIC RAILCOACH ( EX-TOWING CARS)
As originally introduced, it was found that the twin car sets were a little inflexible as the power car always had to run in front. It was therefore decided that the sets should be permanently coupled, with a driving cab at each end of the twin units. This allowed the cars to run trailer first if necessary. The first seven sets were so converted, but then the programme to convert the remaining unmodified English Electric railcoaches to One Man Operation commenced, and the last three twin sets were never converted. Thus the three trailers 688-690 became redundant and were all eventually scrapped, whilst the power cars 678-680 began to run as single unit cars again. Car 679 is now the subject of a project to restore it to its original 1935 condition
