1986 BLACKPOOL “CENTENARY” TRAMS

During the 1970’s thirteen of Blackpool’s English Electric Railcoaches from the 1930’s were rebuilt as One Man operated cars, or “OMO’s”.  By the early 1980’s, due to their age and high annual mileage, many of these were becoming costly to maintain. It was therefore decided that these vehicles should be replaced.  In 1982 the Transport Committee authorised the construction of a prototype vehicle which would, if successful, result in a new fleet of 10 tramcars.  These would be the first new cars since the “Coronations” of 1952.   The contract for the bus style body was given to East Lancashire Coach builders since they had already built a number of bodies for the Corporation’s bus fleet, and many components would be interchangeable.   Since their introduction the centenary cars have since undergone many changes in appearance, some of which are depicted in the models.
