1976 JUBILEE CAR 761

In 1976 it was decided to rebuild one of the 1935 “Balloon” double deckers into a modern car suitable for one man operation.   Car 725 was chosen, as it was one of a pair stored at Blundell street depot in generally poor condition.

To enable one man operation the new body was to have a front entrance/exit instead of the centre one of the original design.   Many of the components used in the new design were standard bus components, thus making maintenance easier.  The wheelbase was extended by about 3 feet to accommodate the new, longer body, and the trucks were extensively rebuilt.

The first model represents the car as it looked when it entered service in July 1979.    761 is still running today, and though various modifications to its appearance have taken place it is still easily recognisable under the various seasonal all over advertising colour schemes it now carries.
