1949 BLACKPOOL LEYLAND TITAN PD2/5 DOUBLE DECK BUS

The PD2/5 buses were introduced after the war in 1949, and were essentially an improved modernised version of the TD3 Titans introduced in 1936.   The first 50 were 54 seaters, the second batch had two single seats on the upper deck opposite the stairwell instead of the double ones, improving passenger movement but reducing seating capacity to 52. The buses were 8ft wide, taking advantage of new government legislation on the permitted width of passenger vehicles, and differed from their predecessors by having a slightly more streamlined body design, with a flat front which incorporated a radiator grille to conceal the radiator.  The sliding side doors were now placed on the outside of the body, requiring the bodywork to be recessed to accommodate them.   The sliding roof on the pre-war vehicles was omitted on the PD2s as it was thought it weakened the structure of the vehicle.  Instead, 6 roof ventilators were included, three on either side of the roof.      In their later years No’s 298 and 300 of the final batch were used as Permanent Way vehicles.
